In the Spotlight: NBA Math Hoops

From free throws to fractions.

WHAT THEY DO: NBA Math Hoops is a fast-paced basketball board game & mobile app that helps students to learn fundamental math skills by working with the real statistics of their favorite NBA and WNBA players.

HOW THEY DO IT: The NBA Math Hoops curriculum is tied to Common Core State Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills, and it’s been shown to both improve students’ basic math skills and understanding of statistics, as well as their interpersonal skills, driving them to collaborate more effectively with their peers. This program is developed and distributed by Learn Fresh, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, in association with NBA Cares. Learn Fresh works to eliminate racial and socioeconomic achievement gaps for students across the US, and ensures that every student is engaged in school and equipped with a solid foundation of fundamental skills.

WHY WE LOVE THEM: When you were in middle school, did you ever stare at a word problem (if train A goes this fast, and train B carries oranges, how many friends does the dog have?) and think to yourself, when am I ever going to use this?

Students are motivated and successful when they can relate their educational experiences to their own lives. NBA Math Hoops calls itself a "game changer," and they're not kidding. They know that when kids feel connected to the information they're learning, they blossom into passionate, self-directed learners, and ultimately end up owning the tools (and confidence) to control their personal and educational narratives in the long run. Nationwide today, 83% of low-income eighth graders are not proficient in math, and failing a math class in middle school is a key indicator for dropping out of high school, leading to a lifetime of struggle. By making math interesting and fun, NBA Math Hoops works to turn that trend around.

In Their Own Words

Khalil Fuller, CEO

“We make math fun. Learn Fresh partners with NBA teams and local educators to show kids that learning can be exciting and tied to things they care about. Our first product, NBA Math Hoops, changes the game by bringing basketball into the math classroom.”

NBA Math Hoops in 3 Words: Fun, Engaging, Effective

If you could have one super power, what would it be?

“I want to fly. In the past I've always said that I would choose to be able to stop time so I could get more done, and while that would be great, I want to soar. I'm an adrenaline junky and I love doing all kinds of adventure sports, and flying would be the pinnacle of freedom and exploration.”
