TUGG’s Tech Gives Back Day of Service is made possible through the generosity of Silicon Valley Bank and its employees, and in partnership with Building Impact.
Day of Service
This past September, over 1,200 TUGGers came together to volunteer across 30 neighborhoods in Boston and Greater Boston in over 70 project sites serving nonprofits of all kinds. This year’s Tech Gives Back Day of Service marked the greatest and broadest reach of TUGG and Boston’s tech companies within the community to date. We also extended Tech Gives Back to New York, bringing together an additional 250 volunteers for our inaugural year in the Big Apple.
Because of our collective efforts, in Boston alone over 70 nonprofits were introduced to new volunteers as we shed light on their missions and provided them with much needed resources. Tech Gives Back is a great reminder that when we come together as a community, we can accomplish great things. Together, we are stronger than any individual or company, and together we make Boston a better place to work and live.
And then we party!
Part of TUGG’s mission is to innovate “giving back”, finding ways to combine philanthropy and fun. At our Tech Gives Back Afterparty we provided the opportunity to six TUGG nonprofits to campaign the crowd, competing for grant funding. Amid massive Jenga and Connect Four games, inflatable Twister, incredible displays of food from local vendors, and an open bar, TUGGers met and engaged with six nonprofits, and voted to deploy $140k in grant funding to six nonprofits including existing TUGG organizations, A Bed for Every Child, Catie's Closet, Resilient Coders and new-to-TUGG organizations, Level Ground MMA, Small Fry, and Youth HUB.
Resilient Coders, an existing TUGG nonprofit, and YouthHUB, a new TUGG organization, took home the big prize - $50k each. Run by David Delmar, Resilient Coders is a third-time winner with TUGG. They provide after school programming and vocational training in web technology to local under-resourced and at risk youth. Run by Rachele Gardner, Youth HUB is a youth and community development platform with a mission to dramatically improve employment and career readiness for local under-resourced youth.
These organizations are changing the landscape for youth in Boston. They are running fast at problems and gaps they see in their communities, and they have developed innovative solutions and business models to address them. We look forward to the TUGG community embracing these organizations and getting directly involved in the months and years to come.
Our incredible events are made possible by event planner extraordinaire, Nathalya Mamane of NM Events. This year, we are also grateful to Boston Beer, DeepEddy Vodka, FitVine, Polar Beverages, and Privateer Rum for donating our bar.
Share your Story
The best part of TUGG is how we bring together the community toward a common goal. But we can’t be everywhere, particularly on a day with as broad a reach as our Tech Gives Back Day of Service. We need your help! Share your story. Tell us who you met, and how you helped their mission. Tell us what this day means to your organization and your team. Help us shed an even brighter light on our day of service, and bring attention to the causes you were able to support. Tag us in your own blog post, tag us on Twitter (@TUGGOrg) or Facebook, or email us directly (email@example.com). Use the hashtag #techgivesback2015 so we can follow along.
Please also tell us how we can get better and run faster. Start ups are constantly evolving and improving, and we hold ourselves to that same standard. You can complete this (brief!) survey to quickly send along your thoughts.
We want to be sure to thank our incredible sponsors that make both the Day of Service and our Afterparty grant funding possible. Silicon Valley Bank is an invaluable partner to us, providing volunteer group leads to each nonprofit project site and making the day possible. Building Impact coordinates all of our nonprofit partners and project sites.
Below we’ve also noted all of the companies that came together to help fund our grant funding to TUGG nonprofits as sponsors of our afterparty. Take note of these great companies. Boston is better because of their generosity, leadership, and forward-thinking, and we are thankful to have them part of the TUGG family.
Lastly, thank you all - individually - for being part of the TUGG community, and thank you for sharing in one of our favorite days of the year. The growth we have had, and our momentum, we owe to you. Keep TUGGing.
